Dressing Room

2018 NGV pavilion entry

Melbourne and the NGV have a rich connection to fashion and textile design. This can be seen in the commitment the NGV has to exhibiting fashion and to the rich history of garment manufacture and design that flourished in Melbourne. This pavilion celebrates this rich history by taking its structure and materiality from the garment, collaborating with architects, fashion and textile designers, to create a Dressing Room, where fashion and textiles is not only housed by architecture but becomes the architecture.

The Dressing Room invites visitors to immerse themselves in a space that is created by a sleeve or a skirt through pleats, hems and seams. This pavilion will use external shade cloth materials industrially sewn by local sail cloth fabricators then draped and fixed to a steel and plastic tube structure.
